Choice contributions to class discussion in my Women and Social Justice class:
“You know, I think that in Women’s Studies sometimes we read, like, too much far deep into things.”
Too much far deep. Those were the actual words spoken. Too much far deep. I don’t even know what that means. I don’t even know what to say. Except, maybe, if you don’t like Women’s Studies cause we read too much far deep, Women’s Studies might not be the program for you. Just sayin’.
“I don’t actually pay attention to pop culture at all. It’s all so lowbrow. I really don’t have time for that kind of thing.”
Because, of course, social justice and elitism go hand in hand.
There are days when banging my head against a wall, repeatedly, seems to be the only adequate response to a given situation.
Sounds like some of the people in my Deviance class, only smarter…with bigger words. Heh heh.
I don’t understand how prof’s can deal with people who make comments like that!
I would like to take us all back to my DE English Literature class last summer.
Actual comment about Wuthering Heights:
“This novel was full of drama. And even today I think drama is what keeps excitement. I remember in high school, there was always drama between the guys and girls or even just between girls. The drama is what kept everyone at the tips of there toes in high school and in the novel.”
Actual comment about Waiting For Godot:
“I HATED this play. It was boring and repetitive.”
hahaha….I also hated reading Waiting for Godot. It made me want to kill myself. But actually seeing it performed can be so hilarious! It really is quite a good play. But I dunno, it may go too much far deep into things.
I think that the commenter just probably had trouble with the too much far deepness, because their level of awareness is way small high shallow. For realz.
I love people who think that they are elite. Because snooty solves all our problems, yes?
I want that domain – toomuchfardeep.com – except what kind of site would it be? This person surely isn’t a major in WS?
Alexandra, you missed a wonderful conference. It was too much far cool to see all the biomed engineering students get their pants in a bunch when the speaker started on about how genetic engineering has contributed nothing of value… heheh. Oh – and when the Sony Music Canada woman cried about how illegal downloading is killing the music industry. Lots of discussion of her lies followed her talk, including a discussion led by one of the speakers in a sessions immediately after her keynote. Such beauty. So nice to see the foundation stepping up to controversy.
Will I see you at the regional?
Ahhh, controversy. I’m sorry I missed it. And disgruntled biomed students. A thing of beauty indeed (I always feel like everyone at these conferences but me is a biomed student).
I was planning to go the the regional, but I have apparently missed the registration deadline because I am an airhead (and because my brain has been somewhat overwhealmed with grad school madness and I’ve been forgetting about the rest of my life). I’m going to email the powers that be and see if they can squeeze me in.
